Once upon a time, there was a man called Maui, and he lived with his mother and four brothers Roto, Waho, Pai, and Taha. Maui wanted to catch Marama the Moon because he’d already caught Te Ra the Sun; so now he turned to Marama the Moon. He told his mother and his four brothers. Roto, Waho, Pai, and Taha agreed to go with him.
Pai got a giant ladder for them to climb on. Roto, Waho, and Taha got long, long, long pieces of rope. They all followed Maui; it seemed like forever to get up there but finally they got to Marama the Moon.

When Maui gave the signal, he and his brothers jumped and strangled the rope around Marama the Moon.“Don’t kill me!” screamed the moon.
“No, I will not kill you, but I will catch you,” said Maui.
Once the moon had settled down, Maui told his brothers to loosen the ropes.
