What does an editor do?

Editors work in different ways, depending on the publication. For most magazines and books, editors suggest (or make) changes to content, structure, and word choice, and they ask writers to rewrite or delete sections. Often, editing is a back-and-forth conversation between writer and editor, and in general the editor has the final say on how a piece appears.

This kind of editing can be really helpful, but at Word Oysters we believe it isn’t always what young or emerging writers want or need.

So, at Word Oysters, we work a little differently.

What happens at Word Oysters?

At Word Oysters, the editor’s role is simple and respectful:

  • We do not rewrite your work
  • We do not change your ideas or voice
  • We do not ask you to revise or explain your choices

Instead, we carefully check your submission and ensure that spelling, grammar, punctuation, and formatting are correct. We also make changes where basic clarity is an issue i.e. we make sure sentences make sense to a reader.

Our aim is to make your writing publication-ready, not to make it “better” or more polished in a stylistic sense. If repetition, awkward phrasing, or uneven writing is part of your piece, we will only make the most minimal changes to ensure that expression is grammatically correct and reader-friendly. We edit your writing so that it remains yours.

Why we edit this way

Many of our writers are young, new to sharing their work, or still building confidence. Heavy editing can feel discouraging or confusing at this stage.

At Word Oysters, we believe:

  • your voice matters;
  • your ideas are yours;
  • making mistakes is part of becoming a writer.

Our editing is there to support your work, not control it.

What if I want feedback or help improving my writing?

If you’d like deeper feedback or guidance on your writing, that’s a different kind of support. We’re happy to talk with you separately about mentoring, advice, or one-to-one editorial help.
